Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari in 2025 has caused a stir in the Formula 1 community. Sergio Perez has emphasized the importance of “exchanging knowledge” as Hamilton enters his final year with Mercedes. Hamilton’s impending transfer to Ferrari has created shockwaves in Formula 1, prompting Mercedes to ensure that his departure in 2024 does not overshadow their 2024 campaign.
When asked about Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari, Red Bull’s Perez commented, “Fascinating.” He added, “But beyond that, it will be intriguing to observe the dynamics from an external perspective. Having a driver who is changing teams… we all know how possessive teams can be when it comes to sharing information. Lewis has spent many years with Mercedes and will bring a wealth of knowledge to another team. It’s a captivating dynamic to observe from the outside.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had already addressed concerns about Hamilton potentially divulging sensitive information to Ferrari. “Regarding future development, it’s something we need to consider. When 2025 arrives, we will assess what it means in terms of technical information,” Wolff told the media. “But it doesn’t bother me at all. We have engineers who move to other teams, and sometimes the notice periods are as short as six months. I have no doubt about Lewis’ integrity when it comes to sharing information. We want to ensure that this season is successful for both drivers and for Mercedes, and we will all give our utmost to achieve that.”
Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 is confirmed, but Perez himself may find his position in jeopardy. While fighting to keep his seat at Red Bull, he must convince the team to extend his contract for the next year. Despite occasional tensions with teammate Max Verstappen, Perez affirmed their strong relationship, stating, “We have a solid bond. We prioritize the team’s interests. The relationship is excellent.”
As Formula 1 gears up for the first race of the season in Bahrain, the question remains: Who will challenge the frontrunners? Perez remarked, “It’s difficult to say until we hit the track. The season is so long that the first three or four races don’t really matter.”
