David Sanchez, the former Technical Director of Car Concept and Performance for McLaren Formula 1, has left the team due to his seniority in the role. McLaren made the announcement earlier this month, revealing that Sanchez’s departure came after just three months with the squad. Sanchez had joined McLaren from Ferrari and was granted a gardening leave period to complete a revised technical division. However, discussions between Sanchez and McLaren’s boss, Andrea Stella, led to the mutual decision to part ways, citing a “misalignment” in responsibilities. Stella explained that Sanchez’s extensive experience in Formula 1 made him too senior for the position he held at McLaren.
During a recent event in China, Stella elaborated on the situation, emphasizing the dynamic nature of Formula 1 teams and organizations. He highlighted the significant changes that had taken place at McLaren since Sanchez’s arrival, including a complete reorganization of the technical department and the establishment of new workflows and structures. Stella stated that after careful consideration, it became apparent that Sanchez’s level of seniority exceeded the requirements of his position. Both parties agreed that it would be in Sanchez’s best interest to pursue opportunities at another team that aligned more closely with his ambitions and career goals. The decision was reached amicably, and McLaren hopes that Sanchez will find a senior role in the near future.
Following Sanchez’s departure, McLaren has restructured its technical department. Rob Marshall, formerly of Red Bull, has been appointed as Chief Designer, while Neil Houdlei has taken on the role of Technical Director for Engineering. Peter Prodromou will lead McLaren’s aero division. In the interim, Stella has assumed the position of Technical Director – Performance until a suitable long-term replacement is found.
Sanchez has been linked to a potential return to the Enstone-based squad, as Alpine has experienced a troubled start to the 2024 season, resulting in the resignation of their Technical Director, Matt Harman.
