As Spring Training approaches, we will be closely monitoring three developments in the baseball world today:
1. Anticipated Results of Arbitration Hearings:
Yesterday, utilityman Mauricio Dubon engaged in arbitration proceedings against the Astros. Dubon, 29, requested a salary of $3.5 million, while the club countered with $3 million. In 2023, Dubon had a remarkable season, hitting .278/.309/.411 in 132 games. He showcased his versatility by playing every position except pitcher and catcher, although he primarily played second base and center field. Based on his strong performance last year, MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected Dubon’s arbitration value at $3.1 million. The Associated Press reported that Dubon is one of several players expected to receive arbitration decisions today. Angels outfielder Taylor Ward, Orioles outfielder Austin Hays, and Orioles right-hander Jacob Webb are also awaiting resolutions to their salary disputes. Ward requested $4.8 million for the 2024 season, while the Angels countered with $4.3 million. Hays requested $6.3 million, and Webb requested $1 million, with the Orioles countering at $5.85 million and $925,000, respectively. Historically, teams have had more success than players in arbitration cases, and this trend has continued this season with a 2-0 record in favor of teams.
2. Possibility of Contract Extensions:
It is common for teams and players to explore contract extensions as Spring Training begins in February. Some teams have already initiated negotiations this winter. The Royals made headlines by signing star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. to a groundbreaking deal recently. Additionally, the Brewers and Tigers secured pre-debut extensions with top prospects Jackson Chourio and Colt Keith. Could more extensions be on the horizon before Opening Day? The Phillies are reportedly prioritizing an extension with veteran right-hander Zack Wheeler, who is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season. Furthermore, Bryce Harper, the superstar outfielder-turned-first-baseman, has expressed his desire for an extension that would keep him in Philadelphia beyond his current contract, which expires after his age-38 season. Apart from the Phillies, the Astros attempted to extend several players last winter, but only succeeded with right-hander Cristian Javier. Although the club has not yet reopened negotiations with those players, talks could commence in the near future, given that both Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman are heading towards free agency after the upcoming season.
