In the world of Formula 1, Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, has expressed his understanding of Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave the team. Hamilton, who has achieved great success with Mercedes, had initially expressed his desire to continue his partnership with the team. However, he has now chosen to activate a clause in his contract that allows him to join Ferrari next season. Wolff acknowledges that there is not much difference between Mercedes and Ferrari in terms of performance, as both teams have struggled to challenge the dominance of Red Bull. Therefore, Wolff believes that Hamilton’s move to Red Bull would have made more sense. Hamilton’s decision to switch to Ferrari is also influenced by Mercedes’ failure to provide him with a competitive car in recent seasons. The team has faced difficulties adapting to the new regulations, resulting in Hamilton going winless for the past two years. Despite these challenges, Wolff remains optimistic and determined to bounce back from setbacks. He acknowledges the concerns of drivers and emphasizes the team’s commitment to continuous improvement.
However, Wolff asserts that things are constantly progressing within Mercedes as the reigning Constructors’ champions prepare to reveal their revamped W15 vehicle. “And when we reflect in ten or 20 years, there will be numerous additional World Cups,” he stated. “But naturally, that’s a long-term perspective, it doesn’t factor into Lewis’ mindset.”
The Austrian team principal also clarified that Hamilton’s intention was “not a letdown” within the team when he and Technical Director James Allison made the announcement. While he acknowledges that his colleagues found the timing to be unexpected, Wolff emphasized that Mercedes has embraced an attitude of always looking ahead.
As per Wolff, the question he has been asked the most in the aftermath is: “What do we do in 2025 with the drivers and 2026? Who will be behind the wheel?” Wolff is resolute that the team is “fully focused on the future” and with the 2024 season looming, there is always time for reminiscing about Hamilton.
