Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur recently faced the daunting task of informing Carlos Sainz Jr. that he would be replaced by Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 Formula 1 season. Vasseur described this conversation as one of the most challenging he has ever had. The announcement of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari came shortly after Charles Leclerc signed a multi-year extension, causing a major stir in the F1 world. While Sainz will now have to find a race seat elsewhere, Ferrari believes that the opportunity to bring on a seven-time champion is worth the sacrifice of losing a proven race-winner like Sainz. Vasseur acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized that all parties involved remain united as they head into the 2024 campaign. He expressed his full support for Sainz, highlighting his professionalism and their shared commitment to achieving success together. With Leclerc and Hamilton forming what could be argued as the strongest driver lineup on the grid in 2025, Ferrari is poised for a formidable season. Vasseur emphasized the significance of securing Hamilton’s services, recognizing his unparalleled experience and the immense opportunity it presents for the team. He made it clear that the decision was not a reflection of Sainz’s abilities, praising the Spaniard for his performance in the 2023 season and expressing confidence in his future success. However, Vasseur stressed the need to focus on the future and embrace the exciting prospects that lie ahead for Ferrari.
Vassuer and Hamilton share a long-standing connection, with Hamilton winning the GP2 championship in 2006 under Vassuer’s ART Grand Prix team.
The current Team Principal of Ferrari has explained that their ongoing discussions over the years have naturally led to talks of joining forces at the Italian team.
“We have maintained a strong relationship for over two decades,” he stated.
“We have always been in touch to discuss various matters, and I believe the idea of teaming up came about organically.
“I cannot say whether it was easy or not, but it happened gradually, step by step.”
The announcement of Hamilton’s partnership with Ferrari was made on February 1, 12 days before the launch of the SF-24. Vasseur revealed that this timing was intentional, allowing sufficient time for the news to sink in before shifting the focus entirely to the 2024 campaign.
“We are confident that Hamilton will contribute significantly to our future progress, presenting a challenge for everyone involved. However, our primary focus is on 2024, and we want to avoid any distractions,” he expressed.
“This is why we made the announcement early, as it was crucial for us to maintain our focus on the entire 2024 season.
“I am fully convinced that Carlos will remain dedicated and committed until the very last lap and corner of the season.
“And I am equally certain that the entire team will be highly motivated and fully supportive of Carlos, who has already done an outstanding job for us.
“Now, it is imperative for us to concentrate on 2024. We have a great opportunity, and we have put in immense effort into this project. I do not want any distractions.”
