Max Verstappen of the Netherlands, driving for Red Bull Racing, took the lead in the opening practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix in Formula 1. The event, which is usually held in the autumn, was moved to the spring this year. The weather in Suzuka was cool and overcast during the session. Verstappen finished with a time of 1:30.056s, ahead of his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was the closest non-Red Bull driver in third place. Williams driver Logan Sargeant crashed during the session, causing damage to his car. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris also had strong performances. Ayumu Iwasa, a Honda protégé, made his free practice debut for Red Bull, finishing in 16th place.
