Max Verstappen was the quickest driver in the first test session of 2024 for Formula 1. He topped the timesheet during the morning session of pre-season testing in Bahrain. Verstappen had his first proper run in the Red Bull RB20 and is scheduled to drive again in the afternoon session. He set a time of 1:32.548s, which remained unbeaten.
Although testing is just for gathering data on the new cars, it is still important to get as many laps as possible. Verstappen completed 66 laps around the Sakhir international circuit, the third-highest number of laps in the session. Charles Leclerc from Ferrari was second with a lap time of 1:33.247s, completing 64 laps. Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin came in third, setting the most laps with 77 and a best time of 1:33.385s.
Oscar Piastri from McLaren was fourth, posting a lap time of 1:33.658s and completing 57 laps. Yuki Tsunoda continued the strong performance of Red Bull by setting the fifth fastest time of 1:34.136s during his 64 laps. George Russell had the second fewest laps with 48 in his Mercedes W15, but he still managed to set the sixth fastest time of 1:34.230s.
Valtteri Bottas from Sauber set a lap time of 1:34.431s, the seventh fastest, while completing 68 laps. Alex Albon encountered technical issues with his Williams FW46 and had to stop in Sector 1. Despite this, he still managed to complete 40 laps and set the eighth fastest time of 1:34.587s. Esteban Ocon from Alpine posted the ninth fastest time of 1:34.677s after completing 60 laps. Kevin Magnussen from Haas rounded out the order in tenth place with a lap time of 1:35.692s, completing 65 laps in the VF-24 machine.
