Paulo Costa was not the lone athlete who attempted a spinning attack on Saturday night. Jordon Stone, an ECHL hockey player for the Utah Grizzlies, also joined in on the action. Stone seems to be a fan of MMA, just like the rest of us. For those who are unfamiliar with hockey, the Utah Grizzlies are the AA affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. The opposing team that night was the Wheeling Nailers, which has an awesome name. Shaw Boomhower, another player with an awesome name, was Stone’s willing opponent. In the early stages of the first period, the two forwards engaged in a bout to boost their teams’ morale. It was during this exchange that Stone unleashed a spinning backfist, although it seemed more like an elbow strike upon closer inspection. Despite the strike not fully connecting, Stone deserves credit for his effort. This MMA-inspired incident on the ice brings to mind the memorable moment when then-Anaheim Ducks defenseman Kevin Bieksa delivered a spectacular Superman punch to then-Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas in 2017. Bieksa’s move still reigns supreme and is unlikely to be surpassed.
