The 2024 Chinese Grand Prix was filled with numerous incidents throughout the entire field. Kevin Magnussen and Yuki Tsunoda were engaged in a fierce battle, resulting in Tsunoda’s race coming to an abrupt end after Magnussen made a daring move that caused a collision between the two drivers.
Another driver who seemed to be in a promising position to score points was unable to do so due to a terminal issue with the engine in their Sauber. This unfortunate event led to a safety car being deployed on lap 24, causing a scramble in the pitstops and a major shake-up in the race’s hierarchy.
As a result of the pitstop chaos, Kevin Magnussen found himself in close proximity to Yuki Tsunoda. However, Magnussen misjudged his braking point and spun Tsunoda around, causing further chaos on the track.
Even before the race restarted, more chaos ensued as another driver collided with the rear of someone else’s car. Additionally, as mentioned earlier, Magnussen made a bold move on Tsunoda at the hairpin, resulting in terminal damage to Tsunoda’s car. These incidents ultimately led to both drivers retiring from the race.
Both the Danish and Canadian drivers involved in these incidents have a history of accumulating penalties for their on-track behavior. Unfortunately for them, the 2024 Chinese GP added to their list of penalties.
Kevin Magnussen and Lance Stroll were both given 10-second penalties for their collisions with Tsunoda and Ricciardo respectively. Following the penalty, Stroll expressed his frustration over the radio.
In addition, another driver was penalized for a safety car infringement, resulting in a 10-second penalty. This further increases the risk of race suspension for the American driver as penalty points accumulate on their super license. After the Chinese GP, the F1 action will move to Miami for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix next month.
