Max Verstappen had a difficult time in the cockpit of the RB20 in Miami. The usual dominance of the driver came to an end during the recent race at Miami. He was defeated by another driver who achieved his first victory. However, during the race, spectators witnessed a rare mistake from Verstappen.
On lap 22, Verstappen collided with the bollard at the tricky turn 16, which has caught many drivers off guard over the years. After the race, the three-time World Champion was asked about the incident and surprisingly, he responded sarcastically.
Verstappen also mentioned that there was no damage to his RB20 after hitting the bollard and that it made the corner easier for other drivers. Despite the impact, the 26-year-old did not seem upset and expressed his thoughts in a unique way.
Apart from the collision with the bollard, the rest of the race went smoothly for Verstappen. However, everything changed on lap 28 when another driver took the spotlight. Verstappen admitted in post-race interviews that his car did not sustain major damage from the collision with the bollard. However, he struggled to keep up with the rapid pace of Lando Norris after the safety car period ended. The balance of his RB20 seemed to be a challenge.
Verstappen acknowledged that he believed there was no damage after the mistake on lap 22. However, Red Bull team principal later revealed that the RB20’s floor had suffered significant damage from hitting the kerb and bollard.
The team principal also mentioned that Verstappen and Red Bull had been struggling with balance throughout the weekend, and the collision with the bollard only added to their issues. Considering all the factors discussed, if Verstappen had not sustained damage, the race could have been much more challenging for McLaren and Norris.
