Sauber driver Zhou Guanuu has expressed his willingness to consider a return to Alpine in 2025 as he evaluates his options to secure his place in Formula 1. Zhou, whose current contract with Sauber is set to expire, is among the many drivers vying for their future beyond the ongoing season. Sauber’s decision to sign Nico Hulkenberg from Haas for 2025 means that either Zhou or his teammate Valtteri Bottas will have to make way. However, Sauber is also pursuing outgoing Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz as part of their plan to transition into a works Audi team from 2025. Zhou has indicated that he would be open to staying with Sauber next season if the opportunity presents itself. Nevertheless, given the uncertainty surrounding that possibility, Zhou sees reestablishing his connection with Alpine as a viable path to extend his career in the sport. When asked about the possibility of joining Alpine in 2025, Zhou stated, “I believe the other [Sauber] seat is still available, so we have an option. I’ve always had a strong connection with Alpine in the past, as they played a crucial role in my journey to Formula 1. I’m grateful for the opportunity I had with Alfa Romeo and Sauber. Now, I’m open to other teams and discussions about my future. Nothing has been confirmed, but I believe there should be a place for me on the grid in the future, although I’m uncertain where it will be.”
Zhou has made it clear that he does not want to be a backup driver or take a year off from Formula 1. He believes that taking a year off would make it difficult to come back, as the sport is constantly evolving and the cars are always changing. Instead, Zhou’s goal is to secure a seat for next year and continue his F1 career. While he understands Sauber’s decision to sign Hulkenberg, he sees the midfield as an “unknown” with several drivers vying for the remaining spots. Zhou remains hopeful that he will have the opportunity to prove himself and secure a seat for the upcoming season.
