This 1972 Galaxie Police Interceptor is up for sale in Pocono Pines, a small town located in Monroe County, Eastern Pennsylvania. Surprisingly, this massive and outdated machine was once expected to compete with the latest and fastest hot rods coming out of Detroit and other places in the early-to-mid 1970s. During that time, cop cars like the P-Code Ford Galaxie, which was featured in the Blues Brothers movie, truly had some impressive features that set them apart from regular vehicles on the road.
Unlike Jake and Elwood Blues who drove a Dodge Monaco Police Interceptor, this Ford Galaxie also had its own unique qualities. It was equipped with a specialized P-code 429 cubic inch engine from Ford’s 385 series of V8s. It is believed that these P-code 429 engines had around 100 more horsepower than civilian versions of the same engine. This was largely due to a larger combustion chamber and a compression rating of 9.8:1, allowing the Galaxie to accelerate faster than most other cars a cop would encounter in an average American town in the 1970s.
Although not as powerful as the rarest American muscle cars or a few European super coupes, such as the Lamborghini Miura or the classic Porsche 911, police-spec Galaxies were surprisingly quick considering their massive size and weight. Civilian Galaxie 500s with a 351 cubic inch Windsor V8 engine could go from zero to 60 mph in approximately 12.5 seconds, according to anecdotes from that era. With the P-Code 429 V8 engine, it is highly likely that this old cop car could achieve that sprint in under ten seconds.
Admittedly, by today’s standards, this performance may not be impressive at all, and some might even consider it slow. However, in the context of the early 1970s, it was quite impressive. Additionally, the rest of the vehicle, including the four-speed automatic gearbox and vinyl seats, is in remarkable condition considering its age. Overall, this classic muscle car auction is definitely worth checking out.
