Corey Kluber, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball. However, his time in the game might not be over just yet, as the New York Yankees are interested in keeping him involved. Despite his official retirement announcement on Instagram on February 9, it has been reported that Kluber and the Yankees have been in discussions about a potential advisory role within the organization. Multiple sources have revealed that the Yankees are considering this yet-to-be-defined position for the former Yankee. Kluber, who resides in the area, was recently spotted at the ML complex, indicating his continued involvement with the team.
KLUBER’S IMPRESSIVE CAREER: A LOOK BACK
In his 13-year career, Corey Kluber made a name for himself as one of the game’s most dominant pitchers. While he spent a single season with the Yankees, it was in Cleveland where Kluber truly shined.
During his nine years with the Cleveland Indians, Kluber achieved numerous individual accomplishments. He earned two Cy Young Awards, made three All-Star Game appearances, and even won an ERA title. His dominance on the mound was undeniable.
Kluber’s first Cy Young Award came in 2014, when he posted an impressive 2.44 ERA and 269 strikeouts in 235 innings pitched. This outstanding performance also earned him down-ballot American League MVP Award votes.
This was just the beginning of Kluber’s five-year run of dominance. From 2014-2018, he consistently ranked high in Cy Young voting and pitched over 200 innings each season. His record during this period was 83-45, with a 2.85 ERA and 1,228 strikeouts.
Unfortunately, Kluber’s health became a concern in 2019. He struggled with injuries and only managed to pitch 35.2 innings with a 5.80 ERA. This marked the end of his time with the Indians.
In 2020, Kluber joined the Texas Rangers for a brief stint before embarking on a tour of the American League East. He played for the Yankees in 2021, followed by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2022, and finally the Boston Red Sox in 2023. While his performance remained solid, his final season was challenging, with a 7.04 ERA in just 55 innings pitched.
Despite the ups and downs, Kluber’s career was undeniably impressive. With a record of 116-77, a 3.44 ERA, and 1,725 strikeouts, he left a lasting impact on the game. And now, thanks to his time with the Yankees, Kluber has the opportunity to continue making an impact in a different way.
