Drag racing videos featuring ordinary cars are currently very popular, but I personally find most of them quite boring. I’ve expressed this opinion before and I have no qualms about saying it again. However, when it comes to watching two cars go head-to-head on a racetrack, it’s a whole different story. It becomes even more exciting when the cars seem to be from completely different worlds, just like in the video I’m about to share with you. I’ve witnessed similar challenges at Chuckwalla Raceway on multiple occasions, and I must say, they’re quite enjoyable to watch.
Chuckwalla Raceway is located a bit further away from Los Angeles compared to Willow Springs International Raceway, but it offers a similar atmosphere with picturesque mountains in the background. The track itself is slightly longer, spanning 2.68 miles (4.31 km), and features a total of 17 corners and changes in elevation. Considering the thrilling battles that have taken place here in the past, one can’t help but speculate about the outcome of today’s race.
In this particular video, a 2022 Toyota GR Supra set an impressive lap time of two minutes and eight seconds. Its competitor was the modern Acura NSX, which completed the lap in just under two minutes. However, someone managed to outshine them both by driving a 2JZ-powered 240SX with a whopping 600 horsepower. This skilled driver completed the lap five seconds faster than the NSX. But the real showstopper was the LS7-swapped Corvette Z06, which left the Nissan in the dust by a staggering three seconds. That’s the power of Lingenfelter for you! Today’s Z06, however, doesn’t quite live up to the same level of performance as that particular beast.
This specific 2004 C5 model of the Z06 has a more conservative setup, focusing mainly on modifications that enhance its handling capabilities. After examining the auction history of these cars, I discovered that last year, you could still find one for less than $30,000. The more expensive ones sold for prices ranging between $40,000 and $50,000, not including the cost of any upgrades. On the other hand, a stock Honda S2000 weighs at least 300 pounds less than a C5 Z06.
However, the S2000 also has a smaller engine, generating less horsepower and torque. The modifications made to the Japanese opponent of the Z06 for this race are nothing too extravagant. It makes you wonder if the driver’s skills and the reduced weight can compensate for the lower power output. The price range for the S2000 is similar, currently ranging from $27,000 to $40,000.
I still vividly recall a time a few years ago when I came close to purchasing an S2000 for less than $10,000. If I had to choose between these two cars, I honestly have no idea which one I would go for. However, considering that I already own a Japanese vehicle, I’d probably lean towards the V8-powered Z06. My advice to you is not to place any bets on the outcome of this race, as you might be surprised by what happens.
