The upcoming Alpine A290, which was previewed by the A290_B Concept nearly a year ago, is a hot hatch version of the new Renault 5 EV. It pays homage to the iconic Renault 5 Alpine from the 1970s and will compete against other zero-emission front-wheel drive subcompact hot hatches, such as the MINI Cooper SE.
If it remains faithful to the concept shown in 2023, the Alpine A290 will be equipped with a motor that produces 268 horsepower (272 ps/200 kW). However, there are reports suggesting that a more powerful variant with all-wheel drive may also be available. Additionally, there may be a third model in the lineup with approximately 215 hp (218 ps/160 kW).
It is important to note that these details are currently speculative. What we do know is that the Alpine A290 will utilize the CMF-B EV platform, the same platform used by the upcoming Renault 5. The next Nissan Micra is also expected to adopt this platform, which shares approximately 70% of its components with the CMF-B platform. This platform serves as the basis for the latest Clio, Captur, Nissan Juke, Mitsubishi Colt, and other vehicles.
The Alpine 290 will surpass the rest of the Renault 5 lineup in terms of power and performance, as the Renaultsport sub-brand is no longer active. It will feature a sportier design, characterized by larger front and rear bumpers, fender flares, and unique logos. The car will have a five-door body style, with the rear door handles integrated near the C-pillars. Exclusive wheels and other distinctive elements will also be present.
Enhanced brakes with discs at all four corners and a multi-link rear suspension will be included in the package. Combined with its low center of gravity, these features should provide the Alpine A290 with sporty credentials, potentially rivaling the MINI’s go-kart-like feel. We are highly anticipating this model and believe it has the potential to be one of the best in its class, despite the significant legacy left by the Renault 5 Alpine.
The exact release date for the Alpine A290 is currently unknown, but it may make its official debut in the coming months or early 2025. Meanwhile, the French brand will continue testing various prototypes of the car, such as the one captured in these spy shots taken in the cold climate of Northern Europe.
