DENVER BRONCOS CORNER PATRICK SURTAIN II LINKED TO SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
The San Francisco 49ers, who came close to winning the 2024 Super Bowl, are looking to improve their secondary. One potential trade option is Denver Broncos corner Patrick Surtain II. Surtain, who has already received All-Pro selection and two Pro Bowl honors, has an impressive track record with 187 tackles, 36 pass defenses, and seven interceptions in his 50 career contests.
According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, Surtain’s talent could take San Francisco’s secondary to the next level. While it’s uncertain if Surtain would have made a difference in the Super Bowl, Kay believes there’s a possibility. Acquiring Surtain would come at a cost, as San Francisco would need to give up their three best chances at young talent this year.
Surtain’s performance in 2023 showcased his value, despite having only one interception. He allowed a completion rate of 59.3% and swatted 12 passes. Adding Surtain to the 49ers’ roster raises questions about the rest of the secondary, particularly regarding CB Charvarius Ward. Pairing Ward and Surtain together would be a formidable combination.
Interestingly, the 49ers’ pursuit of Surtain before the 2023 trade deadline led to the acquisition of edge rusher Chase Young. General manager John Lynch inquired about potential deals for Surtain and also explored a move for corner Jaylen Johnson from the Chicago Bears. However, neither deal materialized, and the 49ers ultimately only secured Young due to a lowered price offered by the Washington Commanders.
In their quest for a championship, the 49ers are willing to go all-in with a trade for Surtain. The young corner has the potential to greatly enhance San Francisco’s secondary, making it a worthwhile investment.
