Fabian Allen, a Jamaican cricketer known for his versatility, recently fell victim to a mugging incident outside his team hotel during the ongoing SA20 tournament. The distressing incident took place in Johannesburg, specifically outside the Sandton Sun Hotel, where an assailant held Allen at gunpoint and forcefully took away his phone, bag, and personal belongings. The unfortunate incident has been confirmed by various cricket authorities, including Paarl Royals, Cricket South Africa, and Cricket West Indies. Thankfully, Allen emerged physically unharmed from the ordeal.
Following the mugging, West Indies coach Andre Coley, who hails from Jamaica himself, reached out to Allen through his teammate Obed McCoy, who also represents the Royals. While a spokesperson for SA20 acknowledged the incident, they redirected any inquiries regarding the crime to the local police. Allen has chosen to remain silent about the incident thus far. This alarming mugging raises concerns about the safety of players participating in the SA20, with Cricbuzz noting that this is the second security issue to arise during the current season.
Fabian Allen initially made his mark in cricket back in 2016 when he debuted for Jamaica in a First Class match. However, it wasn’t until the following year that he played his first T20 match. Recognized as a specialist in the T20 format, Allen made his T20I debut for the West Indies in 2018, facing off against India.
Having represented West Indies in 20 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 34 T20 Internationals (T20Is), Allen was eventually dropped from the national team. His most recent appearance for West Indies took place in 2022 during their tour of India. Since then, Allen has become a regular participant in various franchise T20 leagues, including the IPL, PSL, SA20, CPL, and LPL.
While he was acquired by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team, Allen did not get the opportunity to showcase his skills for them. Instead, he made his IPL debut in 2021 for the Punjab Kings, where he played against SRH. Across four matches, Allen bowled 11 overs, managing to secure a single wicket while conceding 90 runs.
In the following year, Allen was purchased by the Mumbai Indians, but unfortunately, he only appeared in one match for the team, where he conceded 46 runs. In the ongoing SA20 tournament, Allen has participated in eight matches, scoring a total of 38 runs in six innings and claiming two wickets.
