A tweet by Jon Feliciano, a player for the San Francisco 49ers, regarding his replacement in Super Bowl LVIII sparked allegations of threats between himself and Jalen Carter, a rookie defensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles.
During the third quarter of the championship game, Feliciano was sidelined due to a pec injury. Spencer Burford, a second-year player, took his place on the field. Feliciano placed blame on Burford for failing to block Chris Jones, a star player for the Kansas City Chiefs, during a drive that resulted in San Francisco settling for a field goal instead of a touchdown.
Feliciano offered an apology to his teammate, admitting that he acted poorly due to being hungover.
Carter then entered the dispute, using an Instagram Story to accuse Feliciano of trash-talking him about a car accident in January 2023 that resulted in the death of one of Carter’s former Georgia teammates and a staff member. (Carter, the 9th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, pleaded no contest to reckless driving charges and received a year of probation, a $1000 fine, and 80 hours of community service.)
Feliciano retaliated by accusing Carter of issuing death threats during their Week 13 encounter.
Feliciano stated, “If you dish it, you gotta be able to take it. He mentioned my children, so I made that reference. I have also experienced the loss of a friend due to an accident, so I understand why he was upset. Initially, I felt remorseful and considered apologizing until he began posting images of my children on his Instagram. At that point, I felt it necessary to involve the NFL.”
