According to former trainer Abel Sanchez, David Benavidez has not defeated anyone deserving of a title shot against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Sanchez is not impressed by Benavidez’s recent victories over inactive middleweight Demetrius Andrade or former Canelo knockout victim Caleb Plant. Sanchez believes Benavidez needs to defeat Jermall Charlo in order to earn a fight against Canelo. Interestingly, Sanchez does not mention David Morrell Jr., who is a formidable super middleweight. If Benavidez wants a chance to fight Canelo, he should face Morrell instead of middleweight Charlo. Even if Benavidez were to beat Charlo, he would not receive credit due to his inactivity, weight class, and personal issues that have affected his career.
Sanchez is not convinced by Benavidez’s resume. He questions whether Canelo would receive more money to fight Benavidez compared to fighting Crawford or Charlo. Sanchez believes that one fight is not enough for Benavidez to merit a fight with Canelo. He points out that Crawford has never fought at the 168-pound level and suggests that it would have been interesting to see Crawford fight the larger Charlo instead of Canelo. Sanchez emphasizes that Canelo has the right to call the shots because of his accomplishments compared to other fighters. Sanchez downplays Benavidez’s best career win against Andrade, stating that Andrade had not fought in a long time and is a middleweight.
Sanchez challenges Benavidez to earn the right to fight Canelo by actually fighting someone instead of just talking. He questions why Benavidez has not fought Charlo and suggests that Benavidez must wait in line for Canelo, who is the one in control. Sanchez believes that Canelo is the only one who has earned the right to call his own shots because of his achievements. Sanchez questions what Benavidez did to Plant besides winning a decision.
