Promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that Gervonta Davis turned down a lucrative offer worth over $10 million, potentially reaching up to $25 million, which included pay-per-view earnings and gate money, for a bout against welterweight boxer Conor Benn.
Hearn did not disclose the possibility of Davis earning as much as $25 million if he had informed him beforehand. However, guaranteeing such a substantial amount would have been problematic, as the fight may not have generated sufficient interest in the United States for Hearn to break even.
Given that Davis is relatively unknown in America, it is unlikely that American boxing fans would be willing to pay to watch him face Benn. Furthermore, those who are familiar with Davis recognize that he is a limited fighter with an inflated record.
Another factor that may have influenced Davis’ decision to reject the offer is the reports of Benn rehydrating to 171 lbs for his most recent fight against Peter Dobson on February 3rd. If Davis were to accept the fight, he would likely be at a significant weight disadvantage of over 20 lbs.
Promoter Eddie Hearn spoke to iFL TV and stated, “We presented him with an offer, but he didn’t show any interest in discussing it further.” Hearn elaborated, “The offer exceeded $10 million, with additional bonuses from pay-per-view and gate revenue. It could have amounted to $20 million or even $25 million. However, he wasn’t interested in pursuing the conversation.”
Hearn believes that Davis may not fully comprehend the potential of the deal and the financial benefits it could bring. He expressed, “I made him an offer that I believed was highly attractive for the fight and had the potential for even greater rewards. He may not fully grasp the dynamics and figures involved. I might reconsider approaching him again.”
If Davis did not fully understand the magnitude of the earnings he could generate from the fight, there is still an opportunity for Hearn to communicate with him and enlighten him about the vast amount of money he could potentially make.
