Former UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, disclosed that he engaged in a sparring session with teammate Merab Dvalishvili prior to his bout at UFC 298. Dvalishvili emerged victorious in his fight at UFC 298. Sterling shared the details of their intense warmup on his podcast, The Weekly Scraps. During the sparring session, Dvalishvili inflicted significant damage on Sterling, targeting his calf, eyeball, and kneecap.
Sterling and Dvalishvili, both members of the Serra-Longo Fight Team, have a close friendship and have trained together for years. Despite their bond, they have agreed not to fight each other in the octagon unless presented with a life-changing financial opportunity.
Dvalishvili secured a unanimous decision victory over former bantamweight and flyweight champion Henry Cejudo at UFC 298. The fight, held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, was a grueling back-and-forth battle. Dvalishvili’s relentless takedowns and control in the second round propelled him to victory. With this win, Dvalishvili has now achieved ten consecutive victories in the UFC.
Cejudo had declared that he would retire from MMA if he lost to Dvalishvili at UFC 298. He believed that a victory would position him for a shot at the UFC bantamweight title. Unfortunately for Cejudo, he had previously returned from a three-year retirement and suffered a split decision loss to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 288.
