The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a significant investment in acquiring a superstar player for their team. Setting aside the details of the contract, they have secured the services of Shohei Ohtani for the next ten years with a staggering $700 million deal. Their intention is to have the best and most versatile player in baseball on their roster for the next decade. However, there is a setback for Ohtani as he will not be able to pitch during the upcoming 2024 season. This is due to an elbow injury he sustained towards the end of the previous season, specifically a torn UCL which is typically associated with Tommy John surgery. Surprisingly, it was revealed a few weeks ago that Ohtani did not undergo the expected Tommy John surgery, but instead opted for a different type of procedure. During a recent media appearance, his scar from the procedure was captured in high definition by FOX Sports: MLB. The elbow procedure he underwent recently is completely distinct from the Tommy John surgery he had in 2018. While he will likely be absent as a pitcher for the entirety of the 2024 campaign, it is worth noting that Tommy John surgery would have further delayed his return to the mound until 2025. It remains unclear whether the scar shown in the picture is from the 2018 surgery or the more recent one, but it is likely to be the latter. The Dodgers are hopeful that Ohtani will be able to fully participate in spring training as a two-way player in 2025. However, for the time being, his performance in 2024 will be somewhat limited due to his ongoing recovery from the elbow surgery. Nevertheless, he is expected to be ready to contribute as a hitter and fielder by Opening Day. If given the opportunity to play around 150 games this year, Ohtani has the potential to achieve a truly remarkable offensive season with the Dodgers. The hope is that he can maintain his health and focus throughout the year. If luck is on our side, we may witness Ohtani’s debut in postseason baseball in MLB for the first time in his career.
