Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels could be joining the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason. New head coach Antonio Pierce, who previously coached Daniels at Arizona State, seems to have a strong interest in adding him to the team. The two had a successful working relationship for three seasons before Pierce moved on to the NFL. Daniels transferred to LSU and went on to win the Heisman trophy in 2023, proving Pierce’s belief in his talent. During a recent podcast appearance, Pierce hinted at Daniels’ potential addition to the Raiders, noting that Daniels was present at one of their games. It’s clear that Pierce and Daniels have a close connection, as Daniels even mentioned the coach during his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech. If the Raiders were to target Daniels in the draft, it would make a lot of sense for both parties. Exciting times are ahead as Jayden Daniels may soon become a Raider.
The Raiders are eyeing Jayden Daniels as a potential quarterback, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. The team is in need of a QB, and Antonio Pierce, who knows Daniels well, is aware of this. However, the Raiders face a challenge as Daniels is expected to be one of the top three picks in the draft, while the Raiders have the 13th pick in the first round.
Despite the odds, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler suggests that the Raiders may attempt to move up to secure Daniels. During an episode of “Sportscenter,” Fowler mentioned that teams he spoke to have highlighted Antonio Pierce’s admiration for Daniels, who they were together at ASU. Fowler also noted that Daniels, who won the Heisman and played for LSU, has the potential to be a top three pick. While it would be a significant leap for the Raiders to acquire him, it remains a possibility.
Unless Daniels underperforms in the pre-draft process, it is highly unlikely that he will be available beyond the top three picks. If the Raiders are determined to secure him, they will need to be prepared to trade a substantial number of assets.
Last season, Aidan O’Connell performed well as a starter for the Raiders, achieving a 5-5 record. However, his playing style is considered outdated for the modern NFL. O’Connell lacks mobility and heavily relies on having a clean pocket to succeed.
The Raiders’ plans for the quarterback position may be hinted at by their new offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy. During his introductory press conference on February 16, Getsy emphasized the importance of having some form of escape ability. He highlighted the need for quarterbacks to create extended plays and have the ability to move outside the pocket. Getsy referenced the Super Bowl as an example of the significance of these skills, especially on third down and in the red zone.
Considering O’Connell’s limitations in terms of mobility, it is likely that the Raiders will seek to add a player with more agility to their quarterback group. Whether they trade up for a quarterback or not, mobility will be a crucial factor in their decision-making process.
