The 14th-ranked women’s tennis team from Auburn University emerged victorious in their matches against Texas Tech and South Alabama in a thrilling doubleheader at their home court. The Tigers started off with a 4-2 win against Texas Tech, followed by a dominant 4-0 victory over South Alabama.
These two triumphs have bolstered Auburn’s overall record to 4-1 for the season, with a flawless 2-0 performance in home games. The team’s next challenge awaits them in Seattle, as they gear up for the ITA National Indoor Team Championships scheduled from Feb. 9-12.
In their clash against Texas Tech, the duo of DJ Bennett and Adeline Flach put up a tough fight on court two. However, their opponents, Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk from Texas Tech, managed to secure a 6-3 victory, clinching the doubles point for the Red Raiders.
On the other hand, Ariana Arseneault and Angella Okutoyi showcased remarkable resilience as they overcame a 2-0 deficit. They were in a favorable position against Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac when the match was halted.
The victory was sealed by the impressive performance of fifth-year senior Carolyn Ansari, who emerged victorious in both of her singles matches during the ITA kickoff weekend. Ansari’s dominance was evident as she defeated Tiglea with a commanding score of 6-3, 6-0. However, Texas Tech fought back and secured a set victory on court two, taking a 2-1 lead in the overall team score.
Sophomore DJ Bennett showcased her skills with a convincing 6-1 win in the opening set against Avelina Sayfetdinova. The second set proved to be a nail-biter, with multiple tied scores. In the end, Bennett emerged triumphant in the tiebreaker, winning the match 6-1, 7-6 (0) and leveling the team score at two.
DJ Bennett continued to shine, securing a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory on court three.
The Tigers are leading 3-0 against Yarbrough in an exciting match. Angella Okutoyi secured a victory on court four in straight sets, followed by Ava Esposito Cogan’s impressive 7-5, 6-1 win on court five, which sealed a 4-2 victory for the Tigers. This win marked Cogan’s first dual meet victory in her collegiate career.
Auburn had a smoother time in the doubles point during their match against South Alabama. They won the doubles point with 6-2 victories on courts two and three.
In singles, Auburn got off to a fantastic start by winning opening set victories on five courts. Okutoyi continued her success by winning 6-1, 6-0 over Manal Ennaciri on court four, earning Auburn’s first singles win of the match.
DJ Bennett dominated her match against Nikola Novotna, winning the opening set 6-0 and taking a 3-2 lead in the second set. Bennett never looked back and secured a 6-2 victory in the second set, bringing the Tigers one point away from winning the team.
Ariana Arseneault contributed to Auburn’s success by defeating Elysia Pool with a score of 6-2, 6-2, earning her seventh singles victory of the season against the Jaguars.
