The sports memorabilia industry has a high demand for game-worn clothing, but it’s unlikely that many people are eager to obtain apparel worn by a player during a press conference. However, Topps is banking on the fact that fans of Juan Soto may be interested in doing just that.
Juan Soto recently joined the New York Yankees after being traded from the Padres during the 2022 season. In his first official press conference, which took place via Zoom, Soto wore a Yankees hat and a shirt from Dwayne Johnson’s Under Armor collection.
Topps wasted no time in acquiring both of these items and plans to sell baseball cards that contain small pieces of the hat for $349.99 each. Additionally, cards with patches cut from the shirt will be available for the slightly lower price of $89.99.
Topps is offering baseball cards with “event-worn” hat and shirt pieces from Juan Soto’s Zoom press conference.
The hat cards are priced at $349.99, while the shirt cards are listed at $89.99.
While I don’t want to dictate how individuals should spend their money, I personally find it difficult to believe that this will be a wise investment.
If we were discussing a hat worn by Soto during a significant on-field achievement, such as winning the World Series (which the Yankees hope he can help them achieve), it might be a different story. However, in my opinion, there is a substantial distinction between “game-worn” and “press conference-worn.”
Is it possible that the latter category could become the next big trend in memorabilia? Perhaps, but I’m not counting on it.
