Stephen A. Smith has angered many people with his controversial opinions throughout the years—a list that includes former NFL player Kyle Long, who publicly apologized for drunkenly confronting the outspoken commentator at a Super Bowl event in defense of Jay Cutler.
Long spent his entire NFL career with the Chicago Bears before retiring due to injuries after seven seasons. He was responsible for protecting Cutler for the majority of the games they played together.
Cutler had numerous critics during his time with the Bears, and Stephen A. Smith was certainly one of them. Smith referred to the quarterback as “completely useless,” “a joke,” and “a waste of space” during his passionate rants about Cutler’s performance.
In hindsight, it’s difficult to argue that Smith was wrong about his assessment of Cutler, considering how his time in Chicago played out. However, it’s understandable why Long felt the need to defend his teammate. Nevertheless, Long now regrets the way he approached the situation.
During a recent episode of Green Light with Chris Long, the retired lineman expressed remorse for his actions and recounted the incident when he confronted Smith while under the influence at a Super Bowl party. He admits that the encounter still haunts him when he tries to sleep.
Long recalls the incident as follows:
“I was at the ESPN party at the end of the year, I believe it was the Super Bowl, and I was heavily intoxicated. Stephen A. Smith, who is excellent at his job, had riled me up one year with some comments about Cutler. I felt the need to defend my quarterback.
I had consumed a significant amount of alcohol at the ESPN party, and when I saw Smith, I approached him and casually said, ‘Hey, Jay Cutler says hello.’ In that moment, I thought I was being clever.
However, Smith gave me a look that said, ‘You are a complete idiot.’ Since that day, I have been hoping for an opportunity to apologize.”
We all make mistakes after consuming alcohol, and it’s important to remember that before passing judgment.
