A shooting took place near the Super Bowl parade for the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. Gunfire erupted at Union Station, where thousands of fans had gathered. Reports of the shooting emerged around 3:10 p.m. (CT). As shots were fired, spectators and bystanders on the west side of Union Station were instructed to seek shelter in the southwest corner of Pershing and Main.
The incident occurred towards the end of the parade. Michael Hopkins, the Fire Department Battalion Chief, provided an update from the scene, stating that up to 15 individuals were injured. Hopkins confirmed that at least 10 victims had been shot. Three of the victims are in critical condition, and one person has been confirmed dead.
Victims of the shooting were seen being transported on stretchers. According to Dia Wall of KSHB 41 News, an undisclosed number of children were taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital for medical attention. Kansas City PD stated that none of the children had suffered gunshot wounds. KCTV5 reported that two individuals at the scene received CPR, while four others received medical attention.
Chiefs Hopkins shared on Wednesday afternoon, “Shortly after the rally concluded, there was an active shooter situation to the west of Union Station. At this time, we have a total of possibly 12 injured, with some individuals walking in from the area. Initially, we had 10 injured, including 3 in critical condition. That is the current status.”
Patrick Mahomes expressed his support for the victims, saying, “Praying for Kansas City.”
Additional footage from the scene showed several fans bravely confronting one of the shooters and assisting in apprehending the suspect.
The Kansas City Police Department announced during a press conference that an investigation is ongoing. The safety of all Chiefs players and personnel has been confirmed.
