Two fresh adults have been indicted for homicide in connection with the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade last week.
Jean Peters Baker, the Prosecutor for Jackson County, announced on Tuesday that two adult males, Lyndell Mays from Raytown and Dominic M. Miller from Kansas City, have been charged with second-degree felony murder, armed criminal action, and illegal use of a weapon.
Mays was officially charged on Saturday but requested the court to seal the case, which was unsealed on Tuesday. Miller, on the other hand, was charged on Monday night.
According to Baker, Mays and Miller were not acquainted prior to the shooting. They were part of a group of individuals who were engaged in an argument that quickly escalated, leading Mays to draw his firearm. Shortly after, others in the group also brandished their firearms.
After the other individuals pulled out their guns, Miller fired his weapon, resulting in the death of bystander Lisa Lopez-Galvan.
KSHB News reported that a witness claimed Mays had a verbal altercation with a group of four males who questioned him about what he was looking at.
Surveillance footage captured Mays reacting by aggressively approaching the group and pointing his finger angrily before circling behind another person and retrieving a gun, as stated in court documents.
When questioned by the police, Mays admitted to drawing his gun first.
It was discovered that Mays’ Glock 9mm handgun had been stolen from KCMO.
Mays allegedly told the police that he hesitated to shoot because there were children present in the crowd. However, he proceeded to do so when someone threatened him by saying, “I’m going to get you.”
“I just pulled out a gun and started shooting. I shouldn’t have done that. I was just being foolish,” Mays confessed.
In response to the gunfire, Miller fired back with a Taurus G3 9mm handgun, although he was unsure if he hit his intended target.
Both individuals are currently in custody with a bond set at $1 million. As of Tuesday, they were still hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the shooting.
Last Friday, three individuals, including two minors, were charged with offenses related to firearms.
“We are determined to hold every shooter accountable for their actions on that day,” stated Peters Baker on Tuesday. “Although we haven’t reached that point yet, we will. Our work is not finished.”
“Teams of detectives are tirelessly working to ensure that anyone else involved in the shooting is apprehended and receives the maximum legal punishment,” added Stacey Graves, the Chief of the Kansas City Police.
