It appears increasingly likely that Russell Wilson will not be suiting up for the Broncos in the upcoming NFL season. Former NFL player Chad Johnson recently shared a rumor about where Wilson might end up next.
The Denver Broncos had high expectations for Wilson when they acquired him from the Seahawks in 2022. However, he failed to meet those expectations during his time in Denver.
While Nathaniel Hackett was initially blamed for the team’s struggles during Wilson’s first season, the addition of Sean Payton did not lead to a significant turnaround. In fact, Wilson was benched for the last two games of the season.
This decision was reportedly influenced by contract issues. Wilson declined to renegotiate his contract, leading the Broncos to consider cutting him after June 1st. By doing so, they can spread his $85 million dead cap hit over two seasons.
Although Wilson’s best years may be behind him, there are still NFL teams in need of a quarterback who may be interested in taking a chance on him.
According to Chad Johnson, the Pittsburgh Steelers might be one of those teams. During a conversation with Shannon Sharpe on Nightcap, Johnson hinted that Wilson could be headed to Pittsburgh.
Kenny Pickett is currently expected to be the Steelers’ starting quarterback. However, there is speculation that Mason Rudolph, who is now a free agent, may be looking for a change. In that case, Wilson could be a valuable backup option for the Steelers.
It remains to be seen whether Wilson would be willing to accept that role, but this situation will undoubtedly be worth watching as the offseason progresses.
