Promoter Eddie Hearn reveals that Conor Benn has persistently been pressuring him to arrange a bout with Gervonta Davis in the near future. Hearn is optimistic about the possibility of striking a deal for the Davis-Benn fight, as long as both fighters approach the negotiations with reason and sensibility.
However, there is a potential hurdle that could impede the progress of the fight. Benn’s weight has become a concern, particularly after he rehydrated to 171 lbs for his recent match against Peter Dobson, who competes in the light heavyweight division.
While Tank Davis is open to facing Benn at 147 lbs, he may have reservations about going up against an opponent who rehydrates by more than 20 lbs and ends up weighing over 170 lbs on fight night, effectively making him a full-fledged light heavyweight.
To address this issue, Hearn may need to incorporate a strict rehydration clause of 10 lbs in the negotiations with Tank Davis. Additionally, a secondary weight check around 8-ish on the night of the fight could be implemented to ensure that Benn does not experience a significant weight gain and exceed 170 lbs.
“We have extended an offer to Tank. It is a substantial offer, and there are significant financial benefits through pay-per-view and gate revenue that he should consider,” stated Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Matchroom Boxing, in an interview with iFL TV regarding his desire to arrange a showdown between Gervonta Davis and Conor Benn.
However, Hearn might encounter difficulties in the negotiations with Tank Davis unless he includes the crucial term, ‘Rehydration clause,’ to ensure that the ‘Face of Boxing’ does not have to contend with a significantly larger opponent like Artur Beterbiev-sized Conor Benn on the night of the fight.
“This is not a fight that I had initially anticipated, but I believe it is a fight that can materialize. If we approach the negotiations with rationality and discuss the financial aspects, I believe there is enough money involved to satisfy all parties,” Hearn added.
Conor Benn’s enthusiasm for the fight is undeniable. He has incessantly reached out to Hearn on social media, urging him to make the fight a reality. Hearn acknowledges Benn’s eagerness, stating, “Conor is extremely keen on this fight. He has been persistently contacting me about it, and we will see where we stand by the end of this week.”
However, it is imperative for Benn to exercise patience and refrain from putting further pressure on Hearn until the promoter has a clear understanding of the situation and begins discussing weight stipulations in addition to offering an eight-figure purse for Tank Davis. It is crucial to note that these two fighters belong to vastly different weight classes, with Tank competing at 135 lbs and Conor rehydrating to the 170s, effectively making him a light heavyweight. This significant weight disparity poses an unfair advantage for Gervonta Davis.
