In the undercard of the Teofimo Lopez-Jamaine Ortiz event, up-and-coming talent Abdullah Mason maintained his undefeated record by knocking out Benjamin Gurment in the second round.
This was the second occasion in his professional boxing career that Abdullah Mason faced a fellow left-handed boxer. In the first half of the opening round, Mason utilized foot feints and employed the jab effectively. However, he finished the round strongly by connecting with several combinations.
The second round began with Mason immediately landing a powerful jab. In response, Gurment pressed forward and trapped Mason against the ropes. Taking advantage of this position, Gurment unleashed a flurry of punches.
With 2:08 left in the second round, Mason landed a devastating left hand that visibly hurt Benjamin Gurment. Seizing the opportunity, Mason proceeded to deliver nine consecutive left-hand shots, causing Gurment to stumble into the ropes.
Referee Harvey Dock intervened, ruling the sequence as a knockdown due to Gurment being held up by the ropes. Dock checked on Gurment’s condition, to which Gurment replied affirmatively. The referee informed Gurment that he would allow the fight to continue, but with little room for error.
As the fight progressed, Gurment threw a midrange jab, only to be countered by a brutal left-hand shot from Mason that sent him crashing to the canvas. The referee promptly waved off the fight as Gurment remained down.
Abdullah Mason (12-0, 10 KOs) delivered an incredibly impressive performance, showcasing his aggression, speed, and power in a brief encounter. Having fought five times in 2023, Mason intends to maintain a high level of activity throughout 2024.
Although Mason made his bout against Gurment appear routine, he acknowledged that it was not an easy fight. He attributed his success to the diligent preparation he underwent.
“We executed our game plan from the gym, so I wouldn’t necessarily describe it as easy, but we did what was necessary,” Mason stated during his post-fight interview.
At just 19 years old, Abdullah Mason continues to validate his status as one of the most promising prospects in the lightweight division. With ten months remaining in the year, Mason has ample time to participate in a few more fights and strive to transition from prospect to contender.
