Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch is making a case for the team to re-sign safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson, a veteran safety, could potentially become a free agent after only playing six games with the Lions. However, Branch believes it would be a good move for the team to bring him back. Branch expressed his support on social media, stating, “Yes bring this mf back,” in response to a post about Gardner-Johnson’s potential return.
Gardner-Johnson’s time with the Lions was cut short due to a pectoral muscle injury he sustained in Week 2. Despite the setback, he managed to make a comeback and play in the regular season finale as well as the team’s three playoff games. Throughout the regular season, Gardner-Johnson demonstrated his skills with 17 combined tackles, 3 pass defenses, and an interception. In the playoffs, he continued to contribute with 12 combined tackles, 1 pass defense, and 1 interception.
The Lions had signed Gardner-Johnson to a 1-year, $6.5 million contract last offseason. Now, the decision to re-sign him rests in the hands of the team’s management. It remains to be seen if they will heed Branch’s advice and bring Gardner-Johnson back for another season.
