Baker Mayfield Could Land Super Bowl Star Wide Receiver for Buccaneers
In a potential game-changing move, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are eyeing San Francisco 49ers’ star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. With uncertainty surrounding Mike Evans’ future, the Buccaneers could make a play for Aiyuk, who has expressed doubts about staying with his current team. The trade proposal, suggested by Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, does not require the Buccaneers to part ways with Evans.
The proposed trade would involve the Buccaneers offering their No. 26 pick in the NFL Draft, along with the No. 89 pick in the third round and a 2025 second-round pick, in exchange for Aiyuk. Aiyuk has an impressive track record, with 269 catches for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns over four seasons.
Knox believes that the Buccaneers would be an attractive destination for Aiyuk, especially if they manage to retain their impending free-agent quarterback, Baker Mayfield. Mayfield had a stellar season, amassing 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, solidifying his status as a top-10 signal caller. Knox suggests that Aiyuk’s potential numbers with Mayfield under center could surpass Evans’ performance in 2024.
Aiyuk had a breakout season playing alongside 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, recording a career-high 1,342 yards in 2023. Despite being overshadowed by Pro Bowl-caliber talent, Aiyuk emerged as a key contributor with 75 receptions and seven touchdowns.
Adding Aiyuk to a team already featuring Evans and Chris Godwin would provide the Buccaneers with another formidable threat at wide receiver. Moreover, Aiyuk would serve as valuable insurance in case Evans departs in free agency. With Godwin as a high-end No. 2 receiver, Aiyuk wouldn’t have to shoulder the burden of being the sole focus of opposing defenses. He has already proven his ability to complement fellow 49ers star receiver Deebo Samuel.
As Aiyuk awaits a fifth-year option from the 49ers, his future contract demands could exceed the projected $14.12 million option. Spotrac estimates that he could command $22.9 million on the free agent market, posing a potential financial challenge for the Buccaneers. However, with a projected cap space of $43.6 million, they could afford to secure Aiyuk’s services long-term.
According to Spotrac, Aiyuk’s potential deal could amount to four years and $91.96 million. The Buccaneers’ pursuit of Aiyuk signals their determination to strengthen their receiving corps and maximize their chances of success in the playoffs.
Buccaneers Could Face Hurdle in Acquiring Aiyuk
In a potential trade for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may encounter resistance from San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch. While Lynch is a former player for the Buccaneers, he may be cautious about trading Aiyuk to his old team due to the potential backlash from the 49ers’ fan base. Moreover, Lynch has expressed his interest in keeping Aiyuk on the team after their Super Bowl appearance.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Lynch discussed the importance of prioritizing various factors in decision-making. He praised Aiyuk’s performance and referred to him as a “warrior” due to his competitive nature on the field. Lynch emphasized the passion and production that Aiyuk brings to the team, acknowledging his significant contribution.
