With the retirement of the Chevrolet Camaro (particularly the ZL1) and the absence of the Dodge Challenger and Charger Hellcats, the responsibility of holding the fort falls upon the S650 seventh generation 2024 Ford Mustang GT or Dark Horse, 2024 Nissan Z and Z Nismo, Toyota GR Supra, and especially the C8 Chevy Corvette.
Considering its price range and the new mid-engine configuration, the C8 Corvette is the most well-equipped sports car to combat the threats posed by Tesla’s electric vehicles. However, even in this scenario, success is not guaranteed. While the Stingray offers an impressive 495 horsepower, a driver who lacks the necessary skills may find themselves futilely outmatched by an all-wheel drive Tesla at the local quarter-mile dragstrip.
Even with its record-breaking FPC credentials, the mighty Z06 is still no match for the Plaids. Nevertheless, it remains intriguing to witness the battle between a Tesla Model 3 and a C8 Corvette Stingray. Fortunately, we have a perfect example to examine.
The Wheels Plus YouTube channel’s videographer is a devoted fan of Bandimere Speedway in Colorado, Mission Raceway Park in Canada, and The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada. It was at The Strip where the opposing forces of the automotive industry clashed – ICE-powered vehicles versus electric vehicles.
Representing the light side was a white Tesla Model 3 in the right lane, while the dark side was embodied by a black C8 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray adorned with crimson details. Initially, with its immense instant torque, the Tesla EV took the lead and accelerated slightly faster past the Christmas tree.
However, the C8 quickly found its stride and it appeared as though the Model 3 driver either attempted to pass as a Performance owner while driving an RWD model or simply forgot to keep the pedal to the metal. Ultimately, the Chevy closed the gap and secured a comfortable victory with a thunderous 12.29-second time compared to the Tesla’s 13.84 seconds.
The devil is in the details, and the C8’s triumph can be attributed to its higher trap speed of over 114 mph (183 kph) compared to the Tesla’s lackluster 98 mph (158 kph). It seems that the Model 3 driver was more interested in leisurely cruising or running errands rather than bringing home the laurels of victory. Perhaps the C8’s dark and menacing presence proved too intimidating for the competition.
