The second-ranked player in the world continues to strive to become the most prominent figure in tennis for many years to come. The 20-year-old has already secured two singles titles in Grand Slam tournaments and has finished as the year-end No. 1 player.
Already recognized as a leader in tennis alongside a rival, the Spaniard is just beginning his journey. One of his biggest supporters throughout this process has been his coach. The winner of the 2003 championship is also a former top-ranked player and has played a crucial role in Alcaraz’s early achievements.
Ferrero and Alcaraz have formed a strong bond and appear to be inseparable. The current champion has often referred to Ferrero as a father figure and attributes much of his success to the former winner of Roland Garros.
On February 12th, which happens to be his coach’s birthday, Alcaraz took to his social media accounts to send his birthday wishes. He shared a picture of them embracing after Alcaraz won the Wimbledon title by defeating an opponent.
As has become customary after winning a major tournament, Alcaraz also rushed to his coach’s box. Ferrero was waiting there in tears, and the two shared a heartwarming hug on the Centre Court of the All-England Club.
Alcaraz, along with the image of their embrace, also wrote ‘Happy Birthday’ in Spanish and tagged Ferrero’s account.
After a long wait for fans, the former champion will make his return to the Tour this week. He will be competing on the clay courts of Buenos Aires at an ATP-250 event.
He is the top-ranked player and is also the defending champion of the competition. The 19th-ranked player in the world is the second seed, while the 20th-ranked player is the third seed at the event. Ferrero is also a former champion in Buenos Aires, having won the title in 2010 when Alcaraz was just about to turn seven years old.
However, there is uncertainty as to whether Ferrero has traveled to the location of his previous victory. After missing the Australian leg due to an injury that forced Alcaraz to compete without his coach, there has yet to be an official confirmation of whether the duo has been reunited for the South American leg.
Alcaraz will begin his title defense directly from the second round. He has received a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the match between a qualifier and a local player.
