Spotted undergoing testing in the frigid conditions of the Arctic Circle in Europe, the Citroen C3 X is a unique blend of a crossover and a sedan (or liftback). Its front end bears a resemblance to the regular C3, featuring distinctive lighting and a vertically-oriented nose with two air vents separated by a horizontal slat.
The side profile of the C3 X sets it apart from the crowd, thanks in part to its surprisingly generous ground clearance for a sedan. However, it’s important to note that the raised rear section is actually a clever disguise intended to trick onlookers into perceiving it as a crossover. The roofline is expected to slope towards the rear, culminating in a tailgate that opens to reveal a spacious cargo area.
Unfortunately, the rear design details are obscured by heavy camouflage, psychedelic vinyl stickers, and snow accumulation. Nevertheless, we can catch a glimpse of the taillights and a recess in the bumper where the license plate will likely be positioned. While the prototype is equipped with steel wheels, it’s anticipated that alloy wheels will be available once the model hits the market.

Despite being sighted in Europe, reports suggest that Citroen intends to exclusively launch the C3 X in emerging markets. South America and India are mentioned as potential destinations, while Europe may not receive the model at all, although there are indications that it could be offered in Eastern Europe. Only time will tell if these speculations hold true.
According to rumors, the C3 X is built on the CMP platform, which serves as the foundation for various Stellantis models such as the DS 3 Crossback, C4, C4 X, and Jeep Avenger. It is likely to be initially available with a gasoline engine, possibly a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder producing slightly over 100 horsepower. An optional automatic transmission or a standard manual gearbox may be offered.
In addition to the internal combustion engine variants, there are whispers of an all-electric version joining the lineup, potentially debuting next year. As for the official introduction, it was originally anticipated to take place this summer, but Citroen has reportedly delayed it by a few months to incorporate more standard features, which may result in a slightly higher starting price. Nonetheless, we can expect the C3 X to make its debut before the end of 2024 or early in the following year.
