Clayton Kershaw is set to make a return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2024 season, and potentially for 2025 as well if he exercises a player option in his new contract.
In light of his previous comments regarding the organization’s decision to honor a group of performers who oppose the Catholic Church in June, his decision comes as a bit of a surprise. This is especially true considering that Kershaw underwent a significant surgery on his shoulder in November. However, he recently spoke to MLB.com about his thought process and the debate between retiring and signing with the Texas Rangers.
Kershaw expressed, “I have never really had to make a major decision in my life. I was drafted by the Dodgers, and I married my high school sweetheart. I didn’t have many choices along the way. This offseason was the first time I had to make some decisions, and it wasn’t easy. But now, I feel really confident about it.”
He further explained, “It took longer than I anticipated. Once I gathered more information and realized that surgery was the best option, it provided some clarity for me. I ultimately decided to come back. Despite being injured, everyone has been incredibly supportive. I felt valued. It was a good feeling.”
The main driving force behind his decision may have been the team’s commitment to bringing in a plethora of new and exciting talent, led by Shohei Ohtani.
When discussing the strategy implemented by President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and team ownership, Kershaw described it as “remarkable.”
“This offseason has been truly remarkable to witness. There was a part of me that wanted to be a part of it,” Kershaw expressed. “Winning an offseason doesn’t guarantee anything, but we have an exceptional group of guys in the clubhouse. The talent level is the highest I’ve ever seen. I hope I can contribute and be a part of it too.”
The Dodgers have assembled a powerhouse roster, including players like Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, Teoscar Hernandez, James Paxton, Manuel Margot, and the return of Jason Heyward, Ryan Brasier, and Max Muncy. Kershaw believes he still has the ability to make a significant impact on this already formidable team.
“I’ve said it before, I don’t want to be average. I don’t want to just go through the motions. I want to excel. I want to contribute and be a part of this. So, my expectations are high. I won’t settle for anything less than being exceptional,” Kershaw declared.
While some projection systems, such as PECOTA from Baseball Prospectus, predict that the Dodgers will win more games than any other team in baseball, it’s important to remember that this doesn’t guarantee success in October. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers have constructed a talented and remarkably deep roster, and the addition of Kershaw for the stretch run only strengthens their chances. This is an exhilarating time for Dodgers fans, and based on Kershaw’s remarks, it’s an exciting time for him as well.
