Let me address your concerns right from the start. Yes, stating that Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville is the most terrible Senator in the United States may seem subjective at best and exaggerated for the purpose of generating clicks at worst. However, please hear me out. I am confident that you will eventually share my viewpoint, even in a time when there are other strong contenders for the title of “worst” senator, such as Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul, and Marsha Blackburn. Give me an opportunity to present my argument.
When we last discussed the former college football coach turned senator, he was single-handedly obstructing the appointments of numerous military personnel, throwing a full-fledged tantrum over the Pentagon’s guarantee of reproductive freedom to service members. Tuberville eventually relented in December, freeing up over 400 military service members to assume their promoted positions. However, Tuberville persisted with his fit of rage for 10 months, resulting in numerous vacant military positions, including those of top leaders in the Pentagon and leaving the Marines without a confirmed leader for the first time in a century. All of this was due to Tuberville’s objection to providing abortion care to those in service.
Further demonstrating the consequences of electing someone to the Senate solely based on their popularity as a football coach, disregarding their actual intelligence, Tuberville has proven to America that he is unable to name the three branches of government despite serving in one of them. He attempted to play coy with a reporter and ended up defending white supremacists. He equated being Black with being a criminal.
I could continue listing examples, but that would leave us with less time to discuss Tuberville’s latest outrageous actions. These include praising Russian dictator Vladmir Putin and complaining about America’s deteriorating infrastructure and border security, despite voting against bills that aimed to address these very issues. The most frustrating aspect of Tommy Tuberville is not just his undeniable stupidity, but also his belief that you are even more ignorant than he is. There is no other explanation for the false statements that come out of his mouth, statements that can easily be proven false by anyone within earshot and the ability to conduct a simple internet search.
It is unclear when a portion of America shifted from cheering against Ivan Drago to supporting Putin, but that is where we find ourselves. Because, as I mentioned, Tuberville believes you are more ignorant than he is, he insisted in a recent radio interview that the US “forced” Putin into war with Ukraine, claiming that Putin, who invaded a sovereign nation and is responsible for the deaths of nearly 500,000 people, was open to peace negotiations. Putin may indeed be open to negotiations, as long as those negotiations result in him gaining a significant portion of Ukraine, similar to how Hitler was “open” to a peace that ultimately gave him control over all of Europe.
Of course, Tuberville proudly boasts that he has not voted in favor of providing any aid to Ukraine, and he released a statement explaining why.
If you cannot overlook the fact that a current United States Senator still includes “Coach” in his online handle, you are not alone. To be fair, relying on his inexplicable appeal to college football fans is Tuberville’s only strategy. It is not as if he can impress anyone with his quick wit. It is better to keep reminding people of his success against Alabama in football than to risk exposing his lack of intellectual prowess.
Supporting a murderous dictator who likely interfered in the 2016 Presidential election is bad enough on its own, but Tuberville was not finished. He took to Twitter to complain about the state of America’s infrastructure. It turns out that Tuberville has a second online account, and his latest tweet there was quite something.
It is worth reiterating that Tuberville believes himself to be smarter than the rest of us, as evidenced by his disbelief that anyone would take the time to fact-check his voting record on bills that could have addressed his concerns. For instance, he voted against the 2021 Infrastructure Bill, which allocates $1 trillion towards improving America’s roads and bridges. It is worth noting that 19 of his Republican colleagues voted in favor of the bill, which includes $11 billion specifically for road repairs.
Of course, Tuberville is not alone in advocating for increased investment in America’s security rather than a war in Eastern Europe. Therefore, I am sure he is doing everything within his power to strengthen our borders back home, right?
Tuberville had an opportunity to do just that last week when the Senate introduced a $118 billion bipartisan border security bill. This bill would implement strict limitations along the US southern border that have not previously been established by law and would significantly restrict asylum at the border, deviating from long-standing protocols. The bill also grants new emergency authority to restrict border crossings if there is a significant increase in encounters with migrants. If this metric is reached, the Homeland Security secretary could decide to largely prevent migrants who crossed the border unlawfully from seeking asylum. These measures should align with Tuberville’s concerns about border security, right?
“I am firmly against it,” Tuberville stated regarding his opposition to the bill. You see, if the issue is largely resolved or at least mitigated, you cannot use the border as a political weapon against your opponents. And if there is one thing we have learned about Tommy Tuberville, it is that he will never let what is beneficial for Americans, including his constituents, stand in the way of what is advantageous for him and his political party.
I would love to say that Alabama deserves better, but a majority of the state elected a former college football coach with minimal understanding of government solely based on name recognition and positive vibes to the United States Senate. Therefore, I am not certain if that statement holds true. However, I am confident in stating that there are many people in Alabama who deserve better and who are being irreparably harmed by Tuberville’s desire to obstruct every bill that could benefit Americans in some way, simply because he does not want his fellow citizens to achieve a “win” with a Democrat in the White House.
Tuberville may be ignorant, opportunistic, and transparent, but he is also cruel. Let’s see if your least favorite senator can surpass that.
