It is still deeply troubling that racism persists within the highest level of English club football. The Brentford forward recently became the target of racist comments on social media following his team’s defeat against Manchester City. Brentford came up short against the defending champions, who secured a 3-1 victory.
During the match, Ivan Toney found himself isolated up front, as opposing fans took pleasure in taunting him with the chant, “Ivan Toney, you should have cashed out.” This demonstrated their intention to not forget his involvement in a betting scandal. Despite being the “villain” in the previous game against Tottenham, Toney managed to open the scoring for Brentford. However, his goal was later nullified by a hat trick from the opposition.
After the match, Toney took to Instagram and expressed his anger towards those who sent him racist abuse on social media. His post read,
Ivan Toney has shared the disgusting messages he received in his direct messages after tonight’s game against Man City. It is crucial that we see proper and severe punishments implemented sooner rather than later. I will not be sharing what Ivan posted on his Instagram pic.twitter.com/f4CgHAuJ9F
The game against City marked Toney’s third appearance since returning from suspension. In his last three games back, the forward has scored two goals.
Brentford found themselves at the mercy of Phil Foden’s goal-scoring prowess on Monday. The defending champions were in top form against the bees, with Foden securing his second career hat trick. Although Pep Guardiola’s side comfortably defeated their opponents, they encountered some initial difficulties. Brentford forward Neal Maupay continued his scoring streak by finding the back of the net for the fifth consecutive game.
City made a comeback in the final minutes of the first half, as Foden controlled a failed clearance before confidently slotting the ball past the Brentford defense. He wasted no time in the second half, capitalizing on a free-kick opportunity. While Toney failed to score in his second game back from injury, Foden went on to complete his hat trick, securing his third and final goal of the night.

The forward skillfully maneuvered through a crowd of defenders and skillfully placed his shot past the goalkeeper. This victory brings City even closer to the top of the table. The Cityzens are now just two points behind Liverpool, with a game in hand. If City manage to win their upcoming match against Everton on Saturday, they will finish matchday 24 at the top of the standings. On the other hand, Brentford currently sits in 15th place, only three points above the relegation zone.
