When I was in school, I had a friend who was an incredible athlete (she still is). She was tall, slim, had short hair, and could keep up with any of the boys in gym class and outperform 90 percent of them in almost any sport. She didn’t wear cosmetics and her wardrobe primarily consisted of gender-neutral athletic clothing. We played on a few teams together and, once the opposing team (and unfortunately, their parents) realized how superior her athletic abilities were, the insults would inevitably begin. “Is that a male they have playing out there?” “Are we certain this team is entirely composed of girls?” It deeply hurt her, and her teammates watched helplessly as her self-confidence took blow after blow after blow. I often think of her these days, and I’m thankful that she participated in sports before the current witch hunt against transgender kids that is sweeping conservative states today. – Julie DiCaro Read More
The deception surrounding stadium and arena development in professional sports has been ongoing for a couple of decades now, but that kind of past couldn’t save Ted Leonsis’s proposal for a new arena in Virginia for the Capitals and Wizards. Despite numerous studies and evidence showing that publicly funded arenas or stadiums provide no public benefit and only serve to enrich wealthy billionaires while limiting state or local funds from being used for something that benefits the public, state and local governments usually capitulate to this type of demand. Perhaps no mayor or governor wants to be remembered as the one who let “Team X” leave under their watch, and given the prevailing opinions of most voters, it’s understandable how this could become a decisive issue in any upcoming election. – Sam Fels Read More
We are aware that MLB owners have no issue with degrading the quality of their actual product because it’s more cost-effective. They have expanded the playoffs, allowing more teams to be content with barely achieving a .500 record. Many teams will use the guise of a rebuilding phase to avoid making any real effort, and others will follow suit to avoid signing any noteworthy free agents. – Sam Fels Read More
The main lesson from Sunday night’s Super Bowl is that the person who creeps into your direct messages might just be The Messiah. But then again, that isn’t really all that surprising, is it? Considering what has been done in his name recently? – Sam Fels Read More
