The Golden State Warriors have not experienced their usual level of success this season. Despite Stephen Curry’s exceptional performance, the rest of the supporting cast has failed to consistently bring their best game. However, there has been a recent improvement, thanks to Steve Kerr’s decision to make changes to the lineup. Jonathan Kuminga has proven himself capable and has earned the opportunity to have plays called for him and become more involved in the team’s offensive strategy. During All-Star Saturday, Draymond Green commended his young teammate and expressed his pleasure in witnessing Kuminga’s significant progress (Via NBA on TNT). Green stated, “I believe there are only two players in the NBA who have nothing left to prove, and that’s Steph and LeBron… but Jonathan Kuminga has been the key to our success.”
Kuminga received high praise during the offseason, and it seemed that this was his make-or-break moment. However, he did not receive many opportunities early in the season, to the point where he publicly criticized Steve Kerr. Some speculated that he was ready to leave the Bay area. It is clear that he did not handle his frustration well, and it is unacceptable for any player, especially a young and unproven player, to publicly criticize their coach. Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see Kuminga turn things around, and there is a possibility that he could become the leader of the team once Stephen Curry decides to retire.
