Emma Raducanu emphasizes that she is still a work in progress and expresses her current enjoyment of the game while aiming to continue improving and achieve at least one championship victory this year.
Raducanu, a former top-ranked player, is preparing for her third comeback tournament at the Abu Dhabi Open this week. In her first tournament back, she reached the round of 16 in Auckland in January, and then she was eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open.
On paper, a 2-2 record may not be particularly impressive, but Raducanu has shown competitiveness and skill on the court in her first two tournaments. Most importantly, she did not experience any pain during her return to competition.
Now that the 21-year-old Raducanu is fully recovered and unrestricted, she is determined to work hard on her game and maximize her potential. Although she sets ambitious goals for herself, she emphasizes the importance of patience and not rushing her progress.
“I am still finding my rhythm on the match court, and I recognize that it will come with time. I am grateful for the opportunity to enjoy what I am doing,” Raducanu stated in an interview with The National.
“I am focused on improving my game because I am far from being a finished product. I believe that now is the time to start this process, especially after dealing with illness and injuries since winning the US Open. I look forward to enhancing my skills and allowing the results to naturally follow.”
Shortly after winning the 2021 US Open, Raducanu encountered a series of injuries and physical setbacks. These issues affected her performance and consistency, resulting in early exits from tournaments.
Following the 2022 season, Raducanu dedicated herself to strength training in the gym. However, despite her efforts, she suffered an ankle injury in her first tournament of the 2023 season, and her wrist problems resurfaced. As a result, Raducanu decided to undergo surgery on both wrists and her right ankle after participating in only five tournaments during the first four months of the season.
Reflecting on a period marked by constant injuries, Raducanu reveals that she faced limitations in practice due to the fear of aggravating her wrist injury. However, those limitations are now a thing of the past, and she can train as intensively as she desires.
“I have never had the opportunity to engage in consecutive weeks of proper training. For six or seven months, prior to my surgeries, I only practiced for one or two hours a day to minimize the strain on my wrists,” Raducanu reflected.
“In a way, it is frustrating that the past couple of years did not go as planned, but I believe that we can learn from every experience. Now is the time to embark on this journey, and I am truly enjoying it.”
Since winning her first major title at the 2021 US Open, Raducanu has yet to secure another triumph. Over the past two and a half years, she has come close to winning a WTA title only once, which was in Seoul in 2022.
In late September 2022, Raducanu reached the semifinals of a WTA 250 tournament in Seoul. After a strong start, her performance declined, and Jelena Ostapenko took a 4-6 6-3 3-0 lead before the Briton retired due to injury. This remains Raducanu’s only semifinal appearance in a WTA event since her US Open victory.
As for her goals in 2023, Raducanu aims to continue improving during practice and translate that progress into her matches. Additionally, she admits that winning titles this year would be a welcome achievement.
“For me, success means seeing my level of play improve during practice and then transferring that improvement to my matches,” Raducanu explained.
“I understand that it will take time to apply the improvements to actual competition, but I am confident that as my level increases, the results will naturally follow. I would also love to win a title of any caliber.”
This week, Raducanu is making her debut at the Abu Dhabi WTA 250 tournament. The competition features some of the biggest names in the sport, including Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, and Naomi Osaka.
In her opening match, Raducanu will face Marie Bouzkova, marking their first-ever meeting on the court. If Raducanu manages to advance past Bouzkova, she will then face the second-seeded Jabeur.
Given the challenging draw Raducanu has received, winning her first title of the season in Abu Dhabi will undoubtedly be a difficult task.
