Ryan Clark has given his endorsement to Patrick Mahomes as the greatest of all time among NFL quarterbacks, or so he believed. The debate over whether Tom Brady or Mahomes holds the title of the greatest quarterback of all time intensified leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, but reached new heights after Mahomes led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory in four years.
Following the Chiefs’ thrilling 25-22 comeback win over the 49ers in Las Vegas, Clark took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to proclaim Mahomes as the unparalleled best in the business. However, there was a slight hiccup. Instead of sharing Mahomes’ Super Bowl statistics, the ESPN analyst mistakenly shared Brady’s.
MisterBrodo, a user on the platform, cleverly responded to Clark’s post by sharing a series of screenshots displaying passing statistics from previous Super Bowls, accompanied by the caption, “Mahomes stats so far in super bowls.” These screenshots, totaling four in number, coincidentally matched the number of Super Bowls Mahomes has participated in. Clark, seemingly swayed by the captivating caption and the four screenshots, accepted the stats as accurate without verifying their authenticity.
Once Clark’s mentions were flooded with people informing him of his error, he promptly deleted his misleading post. What makes Clark’s blunder even more glaring is that Brodo had shared two game logs from the same Super Bowl, in which Brady completed 32 of his 48 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns during the Patriots’ victory over the Panthers in 2003. Brady never replicated this exact stat line in any other Super Bowl.
Let Clark, a well-compensated NFL analyst, serve as a reminder to always verify your sources, especially for the younger generation. Mark, who covers a wide range of sports and keeps a keen eye on all things golf, holds a journalism and online media degree from the University of Tennessee. However, whether he truly deserves the title of a master in his field is up to you to decide. When he’s not working, there’s a high probability you’ll find him on the golf course.
