Aerial footage reveals the construction progress at the massive Supercharger facility in East Hollywood. The center, designed with a retro-futuristic aesthetic, is bustling with workers as they strive to meet the deadline.
Previously, videos of the facility showcased an empty space with no signs of construction. Tesla was granted permission to begin building in August 2023, and by November of the same year, the first interior structures started to take shape.
Although official renderings were never released, Tesla enthusiasts took it upon themselves to envision the future Supercharger station based on Elon Musk’s description. The Milliways restaurant, which will feature a circular design, is now clearly visible in the aerial footage. This restaurant will operate 24/7.
The seating area is also coming together, as seen in the drone-shot video. Additionally, the center will boast two movie screens where iconic films will be projected on the walls. Musk plans to showcase short clips from the greatest movies of all time, as well as play rock music from the 1950s while waiters glide around on roller skates. Solar panels will also be incorporated into the design.
In 2018, Musk announced his intention to build an old-school drive-in at one of the upcoming Tesla Supercharger locations in LA. Originally, he aimed to have it operational by 2020, but Musk’s reputation for meeting deadlines is well-known.
The time gap between the unveiling of the Cybertruck in November 2019 and the commencement of deliveries in November 2023 is significant. Musk mentioned in an X post in August 2023 that the Supercharger station would be ready later that year. However, as of February 2024, it appears to be far from completion.
Initially, Musk had planned to construct the facility in Santa Monica but eventually settled on the final location at 7001 West Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood, near Lost Hills and Highway 46.
Local residents have expressed concerns about the potential chaos the center may bring to an already busy boulevard, as well as the constant light that will emanate from the facility 24/7. Some have even mentioned having to close their blinds at night to mitigate the impact, according to NBC Los Angeles in January.
Once finished, the Supercharger station will be the largest of its kind worldwide. Currently, the Harris Ranch Supercharger in Coalinga, California, holds that title with 98 stalls. The second-largest is located in Quartzsite, Arizona, with 84 stalls.
At present, Tesla operates more than 2,700 active charging stations in the United States, with a total of over 3,000 in North America.
