The name chosen as a tribute to the company’s history, Sagrera, is derived from the Barcelona district where Hispano Suiza constructed its initial large-scale manufacturing facility. This strategic move allowed the brand to meet the growing demand for its products. Currently, the factory occupies an expansive area of 50,000 square meters, which is the result of two subsequent expansions. Additionally, the facility employs a workforce of 1,800 individuals.
Scheduled to coincide with the brand’s 120th anniversary, the all-electric Sagrera will join the Hispano Suiza family as its third member. The hypercar is set to be unveiled in mid-2024 and will feature an upgraded battery pack with a capacity of 103 kW. This enhancement will significantly extend the vehicle’s driving range. Damian Mateu, a member of the Suque Matey family’s fourth generation, founded the brand in 1904. Mateu received support from his business partner, engineer Marc Birkigt.
Between 1904 and 1946, the carmaker produced over 12,000 vehicles and 50,000 aircraft engines. However, the brand disappeared from the automotive industry in the late 1960s. An attempt to reintroduce the brand was made in 2010 when an affiliated firm, Erwin Leo Himmel, showcased a model at the Geneva Motor Show. Unfortunately, production never commenced. In 2019, the brand made another endeavor with the unveiling of the Carmen at the Geneva Motor Show. Only 19 units were manufactured during the limited two-year production period. The model, named after Hispano-Suiza Damian Meteu’s granddaughter, boasted an impressive 1,005 horsepower (1,019 metric horsepower).
In 2021, the Carmen Boulogne made its debut with a planned production run of just five units, resulting in a total of 24 cars. This model featured additional power, with two extra motors supplementing the standard ones, resulting in a total of 1,099 horsepower (1,114 metric horsepower). Furthermore, the Carmen Boulogne underwent a visual transformation, incorporating copper accents on its unpainted black carbon fiber body, enhancing its aggressive appearance. Both the Carmen and Carmen Boulogne were equipped with an 80 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 249 miles (400 kilometers) for the standard version. The first Carmen unit arrived in the United States in 2022.
The Carmen Sagrera, like its predecessors, will also be available in the United States. However, the carmaker has not disclosed the exact number of units that will be produced this time. Nevertheless, it is certain that the production will be extremely limited, offering exclusive automobiles to a select few.
