F1’s Sprint schedule has been modified after receiving approval from the Formula 1 Commission. The new format will feature earlier Saturday races, followed by main qualifying. This adjustment comes after a thorough review of Sprint race weekends, resulting in the implementation of FP1 on Fridays, followed by the Sprint Shootout later in the day. The Sprint race itself will take place on Saturday, preceding the main qualifying session for the grand prix. The upcoming season will include six Sprints in China, Miami, Austria, Austin, Brazil, and Qatar.
In addition to the revised Sprint schedule, the F1 Commission meeting also granted approval for an increase in main power unit components. Starting from the 2024 and 2025 seasons, each driver will be allowed four power unit components. Furthermore, there will be changes in the handling of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) during races. Previously, DRS activation occurred after two laps following a race start or restart. However, this will now be adjusted to activate after just one lap of racing.
It is important to note that these changes are pending formal ratification by the World Motor Sport Council. The Council’s next meeting is scheduled for February 28, just before the commencement of the new F1 season.
