Transfer news specialist Fabrizio Romano has responded to reports suggesting that Arsenal are preparing to sign Martin Zubimendi, who is also a target for Barcelona, during the upcoming summer transfer window. Romano explained that although Arsenal have shown interest in the Real Sociedad player, they have not yet approached him regarding a potential move in the summer.
It has been reported that Arsenal are eager to strengthen their midfield and have identified Zubimendi, who plays for Real Sociedad, as their primary target. The London-based club reportedly wanted to sign Zubimendi in January, but the high release clause of €60 million ($64.6 million) and the player’s loyalty to his current club made the deal unlikely.
During an interview with GiveMeSport in late January, Romano stated the following:
“Signing Zubimendi in January is extremely challenging due to the cost of the deal, which is approximately €60m [£52m], and the value of his release clause. Additionally, it is also complicated for Zubimendi personally as he is a devoted Real Sociedad fan, in addition to being a fantastic player.”
Many anticipate that Arsenal will make another attempt to sign Zubimendi during the summer transfer window. However, Romano has dismissed these suggestions, explaining that discussions will not progress in February or March as the player’s focus is solely on Real Sociedad’s participation in the Champions League and La Liga.
In his Daily Briefing column, Romano revealed the following:
“Martin Zubimendi is being considered by Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern for the summer transfer window. Currently, there is no further development on this matter as Zubimendi is fully committed to Real Sociedad and has a strong attachment to his club. He is completely focused on his performances in La Liga and the Champions League, without any distractions. This deal will take time, and there will be no progress in February or March, despite rumors that Arsenal have already begun laying the groundwork.”
Zubimendi, aged 25, has been in impressive form for Real Sociedad in La Liga. In 22 appearances in the Spanish top flight, the defensive midfielder has scored four goals and provided one assist. He has also excelled in defensive aspects of the game, winning 19 out of 37 tackles, blocking five shots, making 18 interceptions, and completing 39 clearances.
Real Sociedad is highly satisfied with Zubimendi’s performances and is unwilling to sell him. However, they will have no choice but to let him go if his release clause is triggered and the player expresses his desire to leave. Zubimendi, who came through the club’s academy, is currently under contract until June 2027.
