Netflix’s popular “Drive to Survive” series has had a significant impact on the growth of Formula 1 racing worldwide, especially in the United States. Similarly, their “Full Swing” series, which showcases players on the PGA Tour, has also been successful. However, when Netflix decided to combine the two for their inaugural live sports event, the Netflix Cup, it turned out to be a complete disaster. The event featured four F1 drivers (Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Alex Albon, and Pierre Gasly) and four PGA Tour players (Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, and Tony Finau) in a match-play format. Unfortunately, the broadcast failed to capture the same excitement as TNT’s “The Match.” Viewers were plagued by audio issues, and the hosts, Kay Adams, Bert Kreischer, and Joel Dahmen, often stumbled over their words. Despite the flaws, Sainz and Thomas emerged as the winners. However, the poor production quality became the main topic of conversation after the event. One Twitter user, @13rg4, went as far as calling it the “worst sports broadcast of the year” by Netflix. Another user, @Nate_Edwards, was slightly more forgiving in their assessment.
