Formula One teams are given only one pre-season trial as per the new regulations. Fernando Alonso, a driver for Aston Martin, has proposed some significant changes in F1 that would aid in the crucial development of the car. The Spaniard highlighted the current limitation of only one pre-test per season, which restricts teams from fully focusing on all aspects of the vehicle’s development. Alonso suggested that adding two or three pre-tests during the winter break would enhance the competitiveness of Formula One cars. He emphasized the unfairness of a team’s season start depending solely on a single pre-season trial.
Alonso mentioned the minimal testing opportunity in Bahrain for teams. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that racers have just one and a half days to prepare for a world championship after a whole winter of anticipation. He argued that no other sport in the world operates under such constraints, especially considering the significant financial investments involved.
The Spanish driver used the example of Rafael Nadal, stating that it would be unrealistic for him to practice for only a day and a half before heading straight to the French Open after a 12-week absence from the game. Alonso insisted that despite the challenges, multiple test sessions are necessary.
During Alonso’s championship-winning years, teams had the freedom to conduct as much testing as they desired, allowing them to improve their cars before the start of the season. However, this system presented a disadvantage for smaller teams compared to the larger ones.
