Benefitting from the overwhelming support of the WWE Universe, Cody Rhodes had quite a eventful night on Raw this week. The main event saw him reignite his long-standing feud with Drew McIntyre in a Bull Rope match. Interestingly, the same rope that Cody’s father, Dusty Rhodes, used in his match against Harley Race decades ago was brought into play last night. Despite enduring Shin’s underhanded tactics, Rhodes managed to pin him after executing two Cross Rhodes.
But his night took a turn when he was blindsided by none other than Drew McIntyre. Earlier in the evening, the Scottish Warrior interrupted a conversation between Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins. While The Visionary tried to persuade Cody to choose him as his opponent for WrestleMania, McIntyre made his presence known. Although he cleverly made the statement for his own benefit, Drew advised Cody to focus on completing his own story rather than considering a match against Rollins.
Seth argued that he had already defeated Drew on multiple occasions, so a rematch shouldn’t even be considered. Responding strongly to Rollins’ comments, The Scotsman pointed out that Seth had lost to Cody three times and should therefore refrain from seeking another opportunity. The segment concluded with McIntyre delivering a Glasgow Kiss to the World Heavyweight Champion. However, Cody, displaying his true babyface nature, managed to land a couple of punches on Drew before the latter escaped.
Cody should have anticipated some form of retaliation. And after silencing Shin to end the night, the Scottish powerhouse attacked him from behind. That’s how the show concluded. Fan footage also revealed that WWE intentionally muted the “Rocky Sucks” chants that erupted during the Rhodes vs. Nakamura match.
One can’t help but suspect that something fishy is going on with the way WWE acknowledged the support Cody Rhodes has been receiving since last Friday. Both the commentators and the crowd in St. Louis didn’t shy away from mentioning how The Rock’s return has sparked controversy in the WWE Universe.
Furthermore, the audience even chanted “Rocky Sucks” while Cody was in the ring, causing commentator Cole to question if it was 1996. Throughout the show, WWE continued to build anticipation for the upcoming press event in Las Vegas this Thursday.
The fact that the Raw commentary acknowledged the #WeWantCody movement and Cody Rhodes deliberately delaying his decision makes me believe that WWE is either changing direction or turning the backlash into a storyline. Either way, I’m intrigued.
In summary, it seems like the company is aiming to bring all the ongoing developments to a close at the press event. Cody’s decision to not reveal his WrestleMania plans on Raw appears to be WWE’s way of testing the waters and gauging the significant online support he has received in the past 72 hours.
